This is the story of Subhadeep Banerjee, who got recommended from SSB in his second attempt for joining the prestigious and much coveted Indian Military Academy. He also explains how he was able to put all his anxieties and fears to rest and gained confidence in himself. Hailing from a completely civilian background, his story makes a good read for all the Defence Aspirants.
Just to motivate you guys, I am posting my story. But not to brag, I don’t call it my success story, rather I call it story of my struggle.
I got screened out on 3rd October, 2013 for NDA 131.
I was not exactly heart broken but yes, was disappointed that am I not capable enough for joining the forces?
That day my motivation to join the forces increased even further. I knew from that day that to join the forces you got to have a strong personality.
I decided to change myself and worked through the steps.
I stood by my word, changed myself, jumped to help others without thinking about anything in return, made myself calm and composed, learned to be a good listener and most importantly garnered my confidence that gave me the courage to brave any critical situations and take up decisions and initiatives spontaneously.
I am from Kolkata, and as you all know that we are more into IT and softwares than Defence. And I am also from an engineering background. People who are your so called friends and well wishers will laugh at you for your craziness just as the same way as they had laughed at me.
But I always stood by my words, believed in myself and my abilities but never demotivated or criticised others.
It is not that you have to prove the world, you must prove to yourself first.
Every damn day, change yourself to be a better version of yourself than that you were yesterday.
As I said I am from an engineering background and had good overall academics, so it was not hard for me to get a job on campus. But I knew if I get a job now, I wont be able to pursue my dreams so easily. I remember the time, when I didn’t go to campus recruitment people laughed at me they said I was aiming for the moon (for which I have a firm believe that defence forces really are! ) .
But I know myself better than anyone else and I knew and know that nobody can define me but me. So, I never minded what others say just laughed it off.
I worked hard for CDSE 1, cracked it, kept my heads down and prepared for SSB.
I already got rejected once in NDA and my next chance was this CDSE 1 2017. For 4 yrs, I not only completed my engineering, but prepared myself. Prepared myself not just for SSB, but to become a better person. A better Subhadeep Banerjee.
So, dreams came true when I got recommended from 18 SSB, Allahabad on 3rd August.
SSB is not about giving beautiful stories of bravery or heroism in TAT or write gerunds in WAT. Neither is GTO a task to show off you inner Alpha Male, nor they want to see your skills of overcoming obstacles. It is more about what type of person you are. So change yourself everyday, SSB cant be cracked by just practicing some story writing, but can be cracked by hard work and dedication. All that 5 days don’t pretend or act but respond accordingly, according to what you are. Those accessors over there are far more expert than us in pointing out the potholes in your character and mental health. So follow the OLQs and inculcate them in you.
One thing I can say is love something so much that every other things become blurred but your goal shines brighter than 1000 suns in front of you.
Never look down upon yourself , always love others even if he is not your well wishers. Do not mind what others say, take it up as criticism and prove them wrong by your hard work.
Hope my small struggle story motivates all of you.
Lastly this is the thing that I follow a monologue from the movie ‘ACT OF VALOUR’-
Live like the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their view and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and add service to the people,so that when your time comes to die ,you are not like those who weep and wish to live life again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.
Don’t just comment I love army, prove it by acheiving it!
All the best to everyone. Hope all of you achieve your dream.
